Remote Sensing Analysis of Areal Vegetation Cover in Armenia

One of the major challenges for forest restoration and protection efforts in Armenia is the lack of precise information about the country’s current forest and vegetation coverage. No full forest inventory has been conducted since 1989 and reliable data on forest coverage is sparse. Many areas that have officially been designated as forested areas by the state may no longer consist predominantly of forests while new forests may in turn have grown in areas that are not designated as forested areas.

Remote sensing data may offer valuable insights to overcome this knowledge gap. To this end, WSL compared a time series of well-established global land cover products providing information on the development of vegetation cover in Armenia from 1992 until 2024. WSL also calculated a vegetation cover height model based on Sentinel-2 data covering the years 2017 – 2025.
